North Korean missiles could fire at European territory ‘sooner than expected’

North Korean missiles could fire at European territory ‘sooner than expected’

The announcement comes days after the capital of Pyongyang’s sixth and biggest nuclear test, which had urged for warnings of a “massive military response” from the US and more sanctions to be placed on the North.

As a result of this event furthermore, South Korea led fire-drill exercises at sea on Tuesday in its ongoing robust military operation. It has also been reported that South Korea has recently made an agreement with the United States to abolish a weight limit on its weapons that will respond to the North’s continuing missile threat.

US President Donald Trump tweeted that in response to the North, he is permitting South Korea and Japan to buy "a substantially increased amount of highly sophisticated military equipment from the United States".

On the subject of Europe, Florence Parly conveyed in a public speech: "The scenario of an escalation towards a major conflict cannot be discarded.

"Europe risks being within range of (North Korean President) Kim Jong Un's missiles sooner than expected."

Geographically, Norway is the closest country to North Korea, as the two countries share a straight-line distance of being approximately 3,900 miles away from each other.

An overnight report has made the statement that North Korea was moving a supposed intercontinental missile warhead in the direction of its west coast. It has been reported that this move was conducted during the night in order to not be discovered by surveillance.

In response to this allegation, South Korea’s defence minister could not verify the report, but still argued that the North was ready to fire more weapons.

Analysts predict that North Korea may conduct another attack on or around the period of the 9th of September – the country’s founding day. It has been reported that the North conducted its fifth nuclear test on the same day in 2016, showing that the country has a tendency to cause disruption on its own public holidays.

With further regards to international initiatives to take down North Korea, South Korea have reportedly been in contact with the US capital of Washington, discussing the possibility of having strategic bombers and aircraft carriers in the Korean peninsula.

As well as this, German Chancellor Angela Merkel has called for further sanctions against the North to be distributed immediately, saying that they were “required urgently” in light of what has happened.

Nevertheless, whilst condemning North Korea’s latest nuclear trial, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that deploying continuous sanctions and military drills against the country is highly problematic. He said:

"It's a road to nowhere. Whipping up military hysteria - this will lead to no good," he said. "It could cause a global catastrophe and an enormous loss of life."
